Prumpung: The First Tutorial Centre

SA Prumpung was the first Sahabat Anak tutorial center, established as a follow up to the Sahabat Anak Jamboree in 2000. The local branch was established as a response to the enthusiasm of the children who mostly worked as street singers. These children have problems catching up with their school lessons and this hinders their progress in reading, writing and numeracy.

SA Prumpung began with 20 children, this has now grown to 202 children who participate in regular classes. Recently, teenage students have also been involved in teaching the younger children. The involvement of mentors in this program is an important step towards community development.

In September 2008, SA Prumpung rented a local house, which would become our tutorial house. The centre hosts our tutorial sessions and also is a place where we can coordinate other activities. The centre also houses all our study tools and books for the library program.

In 2009, the volunteers decided to rent another house, this became known as the Prumpung Learning House. This decision was in response to the number of growing children who were being supported by the library program, through Rotary Club International.

Currently, there are two learning houses that accommodate daily tutorial sessions, a library and painting and music classes.

Each Friday, a member of the community allows SA Prumpung to also use their house due to limited amount of room for all the children.

Health Workshop in Prumpung Area

SA Prumpung Health Workshop on Sunday, March 22, 2009 went well. The unpredictable weather did not dampen the anticipation of our children as they could hardly wait for the event to start. Teenagers also contributed in preparing the event. We saw the joy in their faces from being appointed as event organizers until the preparation stage.

Next is the story about the event written by one of the older children

Nisa: My future can be different

Nisa: My future can be different

My name is Khoerunisa, but most people call me Nisa. I am the oldest of four. My father works as an Andong driver. An Andong is a local carriage pulled by a horse. My father does not own the Andong, so he has to pay a fee to the Andong owner. Sometimes my father’s income is not enough for our daily needs.
